According to CBS News, a dangerous highway accident, involving multiple cars, closed all lanes of traffic along Interstate 25 on Thursday evening around 7:45pm . The accident occurred on an on-ramp to I-25 at 144th Avenue and quickly escalated when it moved onto the highway. While entering the highway via the on-ramp, a Toyota Tacoma truck lost control due to some ice on the road and slid across all three lanes of the Interstate. The truck finally collided with the center median causing the truck’s topper as well as pieces of the concrete median to fly into the opposite lanes of the highway. The passengers of the truck suffered minor injuries. The debris hit three other vehicles during the accident but no injuries were reported. Officials investigated the scene and cleared the debris before reopening the highway around 9pm.

Coloradans are well aware of the unpredictability of the weather, especially in winter months. Because of this fact, it is imperative that good vehicle maintenance and driving skills be utilized when the temperatures begin to dip. The local station of 9 News has reported tips on maintaining your automobile’s performance in freezing temperatures in order to limit stalls and accidents on our roads. Some regular maintenance on your car such as keeping up with oil changes and inspections should help keep your vehicle performing well even during negative degree weather. Another suggestion would be to allow time for your vehicle to warm up before driving. This could be as little as five minutes to let your car sit idle while the engine and other fluids warm up and allow the car to work to the best of its ability. Make sure you have plenty of antifreeze fluid and be aware that tire pressures could get low in extremely low temperatures. In addition to maintenance, drive carefully and be aware of the other vehicles on the road to reduce traffic accidents in inclement weather.

With the economy in a recession and higher gas and parking prices, riding your bike is financially more appealing to many. According to the CBS Denver News, Denver is expanding the B-cycle program that allows people to rent bicycles on an hourly basis to get around town. These rental bikes are known locally by their red racks pay station. The company has received two grants worth 1 million dollars that will be used to purchase more bikes and new stations located throughout the downtown neighborhoods. Among the new locations is Colfax and Union Station. These new B-cycle bicycles will be available in March. A man was killed while riding his bicycle after being struck by a car in Westminster on October 11th at 2pm. According to the Denverpost.com, both the car and the cyclist were heading west on 100th Avenue between Simms and Alkire when the car hit the cyclist. Police are still investigating what led to the tragic accident but according to Westminster Police Investigator Trevor Materasso, the accident occurred near the top of a hill with little to no traffic around. There were no intersections in the vicinity except for one private driveway. There was no bike path or shoulder on that stretch of road and cars are required to yield to cyclists. The cyclist was in his fifties and was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The driver did stop to try to assist the cyclist but the injuries were too severe and the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The police have indicated that it is too early to determine what charges will be filed but did note that alcohol was most likely not a factor. 100th Avenue was shut down as a result of the accident and did not reopen until 5pm.

Two men were killed late Sunday night in a car crash outside of Billings, Montana. 7News is reporting that the car was traveling westbound on Interstate 90 when it drifted off the road and into the median before rolling into the eastbound lanes. The vehicle landed on its side with the lights off. A semi truck traveling eastbound did not see the vehicle in the road and struck it. When a large truck and a passenger vehicle collide, the results can be devastating. According to the “Large Truck Crash Causation” study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, when a passenger vehicle is in an accident with a tractor trailer, semi truck or an 18 wheel truck, the smaller vehicle’s passengers are more likely to be seriously injured or killed than those in the truck. The study reviewed 120,000 large truck accidents that occurred from April 2001 to December 2003. The study involved 241,000 total vehicles where injuries directly resulted from the accident finding that 44,097 crashes resulted in incapacitating injuries.

The number of fatalities on US roads has fallen to “its lowest level in six decades.” An AP article posted at 9 News reports that the Transportation Department says that “traffic deaths fell 9.7 percent in 2009 to 33,808” and this is the lowest total number of fatalities since 1950. The report also suggests that the economic downturn has played a significant role; many US drivers chose to stay closer to home in 2009.
The annual highway safety report released by the Transportation Department showed that all motor vehicle related fatalities were down. Motorcycle fatalities decreased for the first time in 11 years, “falling by 16 percent. Even alcohol related driving fatalities declined in the year, down over 7 percent.
